I took this picture of my Aunt's bike, all grown up in a vine, just parts of it sticking out. I loved the way it looked 'Nearly Grown Up'. She has a couple more bikes in her yard, so there will probably be some more. It is 1/2 sheet so would frame out pretty large.

I did this a few months ago, and haven't done anything but mat it. It was done with an under painting of flower shapes, then painted over, leaving some of the original color showing. It does have some gold metallic, but it doesn't show up very good here.

This Painting 'For Sale' belongs to my daughter. She liked it as soon as I finished it, so she got it.
I took some pictures in a nursery, and then added some other made up flowers to finish it off.
This is not a new painting, but wanted add something new, while working on 2 new watercolors.

Blog Book for 2011

In 2009, I found an ad on blogger to get your blog printed, so I thought I would try it, and I love them! they do such a great job. Each year, it has gotten larger because I had more blog posts.
It is a great journal of your art through out the year. I post each one I do, so I have a good record. I order one for each of my kids, and myself. If anybody wants one, I can order them one. They will do them in soft or hard cover, but so far, I have just done the soft.
You can put an image on both front and back, and then on the inside you can print all the comments, or leave them out. I leave them in because I enjoy getting the comments.
If you have a blog, I highly recommend having yours printed!

Workshop in Bullard, TX

The Group

Signing the wall

I was invited to do a workshop in Bullard TX, and it was such a neat place! I flew to Tyler, and Mollie Jones from Flint, TX picked me up, and we ran around taking pictures, then headed to Bullard to the retreat where the workshop was held. Greta Faulkinberry owned the retreat, and it was such a wonderful peaceful place to be. The name was House of Peace, which it was!
It was very much an honor to be there. I had 14 students, and they all did a great job. I was so proud of what everybody did.

When someone comes and teaches, they have them sign the wall, and so I got to sign theirs.
It was such fun! I was so afraid I would mess up, and then we couldn't fix it!

While I was there, I got to visit with a friend that I haven't seen in over 25 years! That was such fun, and she hasn't changed a bit! We also went to her restaurant in Frankston, and had catfish. yum! My Favorite.

When I left there, I went to my aunt's home in Avinger, TX. MORE Catfish! It was great getting to visit with them while I was there so close.

This is another watercolor sketch I found in one of my older books. I still love the way the sketches look. They seem to have a 'free-er' style than a painting. This one doesn't have the black ink lines like some that I do.

A Touch of Red

A Touch of Red is another attempt of doing glass. This is just a 5x7, and worked up pretty fast. I tried to add a lot of reds in the background but was distracting I thought, so I just added a couple little touches.

Actually this was the first Glass that I did, and it was red, with a white and gray background.
It just wasn't working, so after finishing the other one I reworked this one. Changed the background to black, and the umbrellas was blue, and changed it.

This is new for 2012! Looking forward to summer!
Especially since we had about 3 inches of snow today!
Everybody has had a fun summer drink with the little
umbrella in it! I wanted to see if I could do the glass 'look'.
I think the black and yellow/orange really works well together.
Next week I am flying to Tyler, TX to teach a 2 day workshop.
I know it will be such fun. Am looking forward to it.

White Challenge

I am with a group called Art Colony, www.artcolony.blogspot.com and it was decided to have a challenge each month. This month was 'White'. All of their work is beautifully painted and very realistic. This was what I did for my white challenge. I didn't have the time to paint on something, because I am getting ready to leave to teach a workshop. So here are my funny little chefs! I sketched them watching television from photos I have taken. I decided to just collage them instead of putting them separate. Sketch-booking is one of my absolute favorites! I just think there is a freshness and fun to sketch books. I have several that I have done over the years. One of my goals is to get back to using my sketch book everyday, instead of just when I think about it. When Watercolor Magic had a magazine called 'Sketchbook' I had some included in one of their issues! A few years back I got to go to Ruidoso, NM and do a sketchbook workshop with Don Getz, and we worked from life, and it was one of my most memorable times I have ever had! Don is the ultimate sketchbook/journal artist that I have met.

I really prefer to use watercolors on them when I get them drawn. Because I don't have enough self confidence, I use a pencil first, then a permanent marker, then paint. Sometimes I add the black marker when I am thru.
Everywhere I go, I take photos of chefs, statues, etc. I love the little chefs, and have several in my kitchen. Along with the big one that I collaged with magazine papers.

Christmas Art Exchange

I belong to an art group called Art Colony, and we drew names, and exchanged paintings this Christmas. I didn't open mine until after Christmas because the one I sent went to Canada, didn't arrive in time for Christmas, so I waited for her to get hers. This came from Ruth Steinfatt, from Canada.

Well 2012 is here. Seems like it got here really fast! I feel like it will be a busy year. I signed a contract during the Christmas Holidays, with a licensing company, Not having a clue what will come of that, but will think positive thoughts!

I have collage workshop scheduled January 20-21 in Tyler, TX.
One in Midland TX March 7-9, and one in Big Spring TX April 27-28th. I am available for others if the opportunity comes up.

I have been thinking about offering another type of workshop. For those who don't paint, or don't paint a lot, who would like to. It is using your own photos, and putting them on watercolor paper, watercolor sketch book, etc. and then you add to the photo with drawing or painting. Or if you prefer, just learning about sketch booking. They make such great pieces of art, plus is a lot of fun and very creative. The photos I added here, are from two of mine that I have done. I love sketch books! There is a freshness about them, that I can't explain. So if you love to draw, doodle, journal or want to learn more about it this would be a fun time and a time to learn. Plus if you have a lot of vacation photos, that you would like to enhance, this would be the way to do it.
I am planning on doing this sometime this summer, so if you are interested email me and let me know.

If you look at the photos I have posted, you can tell where I cut the photo out, carefully glued it down, then using watercolor painted around it~continuing the view.

I found this old car in Lubbock, TX, and thought it would make a nice card.
This painting was poured, using red, blue and yellow. I used miskit on the tree limbs, and top of car and part of the snow on the ground. It was done a few years ago, but I always have fun dragging out some of my favorites. This is what it looked like here during Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. We don't normally have a white Christmas and it was beautiful.

When our kids were little they dressed up in towels, and played 'Christmas'. This is from a photo i found of them. They had a little wooden stool and Keri had her doll wrapped up and laying on it, and they were praying. It was so cute. I just made up the background. This was done 'several' years ago, but always brings back such sweet memories for me. They probably don't even remember it!

The Piano Player

Both of our kids took piano lessons for years. There is no telling how many miles we drove, just for them to learn. It was always such a joy to hear them play, and practice. Just to hear the beginning of a new song, and then hear it after it was learned was such fun for me. I know a lot of parents hated to hear their kids practice, but I can honestly say I loved it every time they sat down at the piano. Now I miss hearing it so much. Our piano is out of tune, and needs their touch again! I am so glad God gave us music to enjoy!

Choir Program

Keri and I saw a red and white one in Dallas, that we loved, so this one had to be red and white.

Dennis, a very good friend of ours, emailed me and ask me if I would do his portrait from Viet Nam for his wife for Christmas, and it not only scared me to death, but also honor that he would trust me with it.

I told him I would try but no promises. When he sent his pictures they made me cry, at the thought of what he and his wife and family went through knowing he was in such danger. Every picture he sent me had a special story about it. I printed out some some of his writing, and put it on the edges of the canvas. I printed his photos out, and made them in a gray color, and put them in it too.Their daughter was born while he was gone so her birth date is on it.

There is a lot of history , sadness, courage, honor, bravery and love in his story. I was surprised at some of the words I was able to find to go on it, that was just the right thing.

He decided to give it to his wife on Veterans day instead of waiting for Christmas. We are very fortunate to have men and women who will go and serve and defend our wonderful country., no matter what their part was. I am married to one myself.

And I want to say Thank you to Dennis for sharing this time of his life with all of us. It has been a long time coming. I am very honored to have gotten to do this for him and his family.

For Veterans Day

I hope we stop and remember those who have served our country for whatever reason. War or Peace, and think of those who have given the ultimate...their life. There are many men and women who are away from home for months, years at a time. Thanks to them! Thanks to my family members who served. Ken was in the Navy for 4 years.....Thanks for our friends who served.

So I am posting this little flag in their honor! along with the steps I took to paint it.

I did this painting a while back, took photos of the steps,and thought I would show how I work with watercolor.

STEP #1

I do a drawing the size that I want with pencil, then I go over it with a sharpie or black pen, and use my light box to transfer onto 140 lb arches cold press or WN rough watercolor paper. Keeping your pencil lines light, using a vinyl eraser if you have to correct.

STEP #2

I use Manganese blue mixed with Permanent Rose,a little ultramarine blue, and sometimes some turquoise to paint in the shadows, and I use this technique all the time. Sometimes I add a tiny bit of orange.

When you paint over it, it shows through as a shadow, and You can always add local color to it as you go. I try to paint the shadow about 40% if possible.

STEP#3

For some reason, this photo is much lighter, but you can see where I stared in adding the flag color.

I love to use a lot of reds. I use Alizarin Crimson for my darkest red, and I LOVE Bright Red for the sunlit areas of the flag. I use dark blues along with ultramarine blue for the blue leaving the stars white. I normally dont mask them.If I need more shadow on the flag I use ultramarine blue. It will really pop a shadow when you use it last.

STEP #4

I just continue on adding the leaves, stems, and flowers. Using the dark and light red where it is in sun or in shadow. I love thalo yellow green, and I put that with yellow down first on the leaves, along with some burnt orange, and some reds that are in the flowers. I used Burnt orange and oranges for the clay pot, using some kosher salt for texture.

STEP #5

This is the finished piece. I painted the background with some blues,leaving some white showing through,

and finished the big metal pot it was sitting in.

Halloween Challenge

'SPOOKTACULAR COWGIRL'

I was invited to do a painting for a 'Halloween Challenge' by Chris Beck, along with Pablo Villicana Lara.

At first I was a little hesitant, since I am not real crazy about Halloween, but I do love to see the cute kids in their costumes, etc. so I agreed, then I had problems trying to decide what to do!

When Keri and I went to the Ft.Worth Stockyards, I saw the cutest skeleton decoration. She had a green feather boa, and orange flip flops, and a witch hat, so I turned her into a Texas Cowgirl Skeleton! A friend said she could have a western hat, and at the same time we both said AND BOOTS! so wa-la! Here she is, in all her black and orange with her best friend 'Midnight' the Black Cat at her side.
She could be called 'October Cowgirl' or 'Texas Halloween'...

There were several ideas on that, but Spooktacular Cowgirl won out.

Collage Workshop

We had our collage workshop this week end in Plains, and had such fun! Every body did a great job.
We had a geologist from Midland, 2 art teachers from Lubbock, a retired teacher from Hobbs, NM, a teacher from Eunice NM and two from Plains.

Lets Dance!

I am honored that this torn paper piece was accepted into theMidland Art Association/Midland College 34th Annual Fall Juried Art Show. The show will be open from October 14 through November 11 at the McCormick Gallery, Allison Fine Arts Building in Midland. I was told that there were a lot of entries, and they could only take a certain amount due to space.

This was done with magazine pages, and I used an acrylic wash on the background.

Today I was honored to do a torn paper demo in Midland, TX.. My sister went with me and we had a great time. Haven't seen each other in about a year. (ridiculous) As I drove up, Barbara read the sign, and I got so excited, and told her we had to get a photo!

There was a big crowd, and they were so gracious, and interested, and excited to see how the torn paper was done. I am doing a workshop there in March, and they told me today that the workshop was full. I put the bottom picture so you could see the cowboy I was working on. Of course I didn't even get through. I sold 2 pieces! Yeah! One of the boots and an old pick-up.

It was a lot of fun, but boy I am beat. Got up at 4:30 this a.m. to get there in time! What we will do for art!

This past week end the Southwestern Watercolor Society Show was held at the PFamily Arts Center in Plano TX. Keri (my daughter) and I flew to Dallas, to be there for the reception.
It was such fun, and a great honor not only to get my signature status but to have one of my favorite artist friend present it to me! I met Naomi Brotherton in 1999 in Graham TX. I went to Graham to take her workshop, and we have been good friends since that time. She is a wonderful friend, and a wonderful artist.
She is still teaching! Every week! I hope when I am her age, I can too!
Kay Smith from Big Spring, another good friend was also in the show, and was there to accept her award.. A good school friend, Diane and her husband, Everett also came to help us celebrate. It was so good to get to see them!

Tokio Post Office

This is Tokio Post Office, taken back years ago. It is gone now. The building is not even there. I was so sad when I drove by, and it was gone.
This painting was done by pouring the paint. I mixed it up in cups, and poured three colors. Yellow first, where I wanted the sun shine, then blue and red in the sky. I had to mask out the whites. After it was dry, then I did the detail with a brush.

Tokio Cross Roads

Tokio Cross Roads

This old truck was buried up in weeds, in Tokio TX. Tokio is an old 'little bitty' town that is now just a ghost town. All the buildings are falling down. There are so many memories from Tokio! I never lived there, but I hear so much about it, since so many of Plains people used to live there. Some dear friends met there at the Baptist Church, and married, over 40 years ago! It was a wonderful little town in its' day. My Granddad used to tell me stories about he and my Grandmother riding their horses to Tokio for 'play parties.'

If you ever travel on US 82 between Plains and Brownfield TX you will go thru this special place.

I have painted all the buildings, and they have fallen down since then! I will post them next.

By the way, this truck disappeared after I painted it!

This is the old truck, from the last post. The lighting was just perfect on the front. I use a lot of Kosher Salt to get the rusty texture. I would love to know where 'all' this old relic has been! They all have a story to tell...

Haul'n Hay

In July, I went out to our neighbors ranch, to take photos of his horse, saddles, etc, and when I drove up there was this wonderful OLD green truck!. Of course I had to photo it, inside and out. The photo of the inside really excited me so I painted it in with watercolor. It has many many layers of paint to get the dark door.
I had such fun painting it.
(The photo is a little darker than real life, and the steering wheel shows up on the left better than it does in here)

'Just Be Yourself'

I love zebras, and have painted several, so I thought I would try to do one with the torn paper. I named this one 'Just Be Yourself' because of all the weird stripes, polka dots, etc.
This Zebra definitely doesn't fit in with the rest of the herd. It was fun to do.

Kay Smith invited me to come to her studio in Big Spring, TX and do a torn paper workshop.
It was great, we had 9 sign up, and one had to miss. We had a lot of fun. They did different things.
But there was lots of silence with the sound of tearing paper! It is so funny, in every workshop I have done, people say, well! I will NEVER look at a magazine the same again. How true that is!

I started this at the workshop in Plains, and just couldn't get back to it, because our art show was starting.
Then I was gone the next week. Finally, yesterday, I got to finish it. It felt so good to be back in the groove, in my art room. I hope to get some drawings done soon. Have a workshop this Saturday in Big Spring, so will be getting that together the rest of this week.

Spring is Here

Our annual art show was this past week. It went great. Lots of hard work, but it is always fun. I got a 1st place on a portrait of the fisherman. (earlier post) and won 3 second places. Seven pieces sold, and am very honored that people buy my art. 'Spring is Here' is a new painting, and it won a 2nd place, along with 'Fashion Statement' and 'Rodeo Clown'..Both earlier posts.
I actually started 'Spring painting' a few years ago, and I put it up, then dug it out and finished it.
It is watercolor, with cut out flowers and then collaged onto the painting.
I painted the paper in shades of blue with watercolor, then used one of those metal cutters and cut out all the tiny petals.

I found an ad to print my blog, so I had 2009 printed, and really liked the way it turned out. It was only a few pages since I had just starting doing the blog. So at the beginning of this year, I had 2010 printed , and this is what it looks like. I had some to ask about buying them, So I ordered a few, and have them for sale. It has most all of the work I did in 2010, plus the story or techniques. It also has the comments that people made about the art work.

Yesterday Kenley and Hunter (Son and Granddaughter) came to check on their horses, and ride for a little while. I love horses, western art, hats, boots, etc. Anything western! So watching them made me think of the painting I had done "Saddle Up" in 2009, plus I did Ellie Mae for Hunter. She hasn't seen it, but she will get it for her birthday in August. She will be 10. I just had to add the photo of Hunter kissing Ellie. She was so glad to see her.

I used gouache in the background, and on the mane on the Saddle Up painting, and a little here an there on the saddle horn. The rest is transparent watercolor.

We just finished a workshop here in Plains. I had an awesome group of ladies.

They were from several different places! From Amarillo, Big Spring, Sundown, Hobbs NM, Eunice, NM

Abernathy, Lubbock, Ransom Canyon and Plains.There are two that aren't in the photo! Somehow we missed them.
The Cupcake at the top, was my demo, and it sold. The lady who bought it named it "Buttons and Bows."
This cupcake was done by Kay Smith from Big Spring. She wasn't in our picture, and she sent me her finished piece.

This collage was fun to do, since we are cotton farmers. There are a few words on there, that says it all...

Despite Wild Weather...we keep praying and waiting for a good crop. Cotton Gin, for obvious reasons,

Stars for American Cotton, irrigation, Tradition, and planting, There are probably a few more.

This has been an extremely hard year for us. We haven't had any rain until last night, and only got one half of an inch, which we are very thankful for. I have learned a lot from my farmer husband. Lots of patience, and hope and faith. Only God can make it grow. Our main job is to plant it, and care for it.

It is a very rewarding as well as frustrating way of life, and we wouldn't have it any other way. We feel very blessed to get to be where we are.

A new art friend of mine, Mollie Jones lives near Tyler, and she went into the store and found my Pizza guy!
She has been as excited as I have! Actually All my family and friends have been so excited for me, and I appreciate it so much! People have written saying they went to Kohl's where they live, and couldn't find anything. Here is what she wrote with the pictures she sent.

Okay Suzy...here ya go. This is what I found at Kohl's. Took one alone and one with yours truly to show the size of the painting...snag whichever you'd like. Sorry about the glare on my photograph. The photo was taken by one of the dept managers and he said that he was thrilled to know the artist as they don't usually know anything about them. Of course, I did have to give him a little history. There were only 2 there...they've already sold 1 as the manager said they start out with 3 or 6(on smaller paintings). They are located in the picture and home decor section in our Tyler store...and he looks great as he's more colorful than most of the offerings. They're listed at $69.95 which is a great price for something that large...YIPPEE...you go girl!!

This was done on a 6x9 that had a very pale under-painting on it. I haven't really done any watercolors since Christmas and was worrying about that, so I did a very quick drawing...I divided my photo in 9 equal sections, then drew very light lines in 9 equal sections and just drew it in, then quickly painted it.

Trying not to be detailed ...I just wanted to get the message across of what it is.

I am pretty sure I didn't spend much over an hour, if that long painting it, wanting to stay fresh.

This is a scene I see every-time I go to town, this time of year, but I think sadly, it wont happen this year. We haven't had any rain. There are not very many crops around this year.

I started this commission in June, and it took a while to get her done. It has a lot of family photos in the background. It was a lot of fun, and quite a challenge. It is 30"x40". The first photo is in her living room.

This was done from one of their cows. She was number 10! The -M (Bar M) is their brand, and it is on it in several places. This will be at home in O'Donnell, TX.

A few years ago, I did these boots in pencil, and wanted to try my hand at the torn paper collage technique using only black and white. For me, Using just black and white is very hard. I can see where I need to make a few changes. I may even pop in some color somewhere. It may need some red. It does have a tiny bit of blues. I found the name in a western magazine. It was the title of 'something'. I don't read them, I just tear them up!

My Garden Chair was selected to be in the SWS show in September. The show will be in Plano, TX.
That means I will get my Signature Status. I am so excited. I have worked very hard for a lot of years, trying to get in. I feel very blessed.
For those who don't know about signature status: They are all different on the amount of paintings that have to be selected. I got my signature status with Wyoming watercolor society a few years ago. It means when I sign my painting I can put SWS by my signature , so now I can put WyWS and SWS both. There are 2 other societies I have been trying to get in, but it just takes a long time.

Workshop July 22-23

I have had a couple of questions about the workshop in July. It is July 22-23 in Plains, TX, at the community center. I will have a drawing for anybody that wants to start out and do what I am going to demo. It will be 10-4. There is a good Mexican food place, DQ, and burrito place. Not sure if the Bar-B-Q will be open.
Or you can bring your lunch. All you need are 3-4 magazines, canvas and glue.
I prefer the magazines with the slick pages.
The 2nd day, I want you to do your own design. There will be some from Hobbs, and Lubbock. If you are interested contact me for supply list, etc.There is a little Bed and Breakfast in Plains, and a motel in Denver City, if you don't want to drive.

I just got back from a collage workshop doing portraits with Derek Gores. We were at Cypress Mills,TX.
It was too hot for life nearly!

We got stranded in Memphis coming from Charlotte,NC due to the weather. We made the best of it, and got a taxi and went downtown to Beale Street and I saw this woman. She carried herself with so much confidence. I thought she was very pretty. I didn't even do her justice, but I tried!
Instead of doing the normal skin color, I chose to do the black and white so it would stand out. I loved her big hair do! I hate to post her photo that I took on here, since I took her with out her knowledge.

Well, it has been nearly three weeks since I was able to post anything! My daughter and I went to Myrtle, Beach for a week, then when I got home I packed up again, and left for a torn paper collage workshop down close to Marble Falls, TX.
Our trip was to SC was awesome! we got there the first night with no luggage. Then when we started home, we got stranded in Memphis TN due to bad weather, but we made the most of it, and went downtown.
It was a relaxing trip. We went to the beach each day. When we opened our curtains, our view was the ocean, and if we opened the balcony doors, the roar of the ocean was unbelievable! Our room was cute and
'beachy' looking. We went to the SC Opry and it was very good. We experienced seafood we never heard of! One by accident. It was Conch, and pronounced Conk. Not impressed with that either.
Everybody there was so friendly, and the beach was so clean. I would go back. Maybe I will have a painting come from our trip at some point in time.

This was the truck I started at the Arts Festival in Lubbock, TX back in April, and am just now getting it finished. I will check it in a day or two and see if I am through or not. But I think maybe it is.

This new art medium has been crazy for me, and has taken a wild turn! Not only have I done some demos, and sold several pieces, I also was contacted to do another demo, and a workshop in March 2012.

I have said this to say this...

I have some really exciting news, and I am still half way afraid to even say it out loud...I have known for a month, but been waiting on the contract, etc. ..I don't know what will come of it, but 5 of my torn paper pieces have been chosen, to be reproduced, and are supposed to be in Kohl's. The original plan was 3 pieces, but she chose 2 more. So I am not sure where the other 2 will be.

I don't have any dates when they will be in the stores, but will ship the paintings to California tomorrow! I am still in shock over it. I feel so very blessed by God, I know He had a hand in this, and I thank Him for the opportunity to get my art work in the public.One of my favorite scriptures, Isaiah 41:13 says 'For I am the Lord, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.

And He does!

This week our West Texas Watercolor Show was judged and I got an honorable mention on this flamingo painting. It is done with an under-painting first. I have done 2 others. This one is the 3rd one.

The show opens this Friday night at the Baker Building in Lubbock, and will be there for a month.

This Torn Paper Boot was a commission for a hair place on 5th Street in Austin, called "Blow Me Dry". It is a unique 'hair place' from what I read. Check out their website: www.blomedry.com
They don't cut or color, they just do the hair styles for busy women. They wanted some of the Breast Cancer awareness ribbon on it, so there are several. For some reason, pink magazine pages are hard to find. At least in the magazines I hunt through. Maybe because the summer magazines aren't out yet.

Since we haven't had ANY rain at all, I thought I would add these little wild flowers. I took a picture of clumps of them, growing in the pastures just West of town several years ago. They are so pretty when in full bloom. I don't know the real name for them, but they are beautiful growing in and out of the barbed wire. Maybe we will have some blooming soon!

This painting was done first with transparent watercolor, then I painted over it with gouache leaving a little bit of the paint showing. For those of you who don't know what gouache is...pronounced gwash...it is watercolor but it is opaque. It has a chalky appearance.

I had a piece of paper that had a weird under-painting on it, so I just drew off this little set up, and painted the painting in less than an hour. working as quickly as possible.leaving some of the under-painting showing thru.
I tried to put the subject where the white would work best, like the icing on the cupcake, the highlight on the egg.
(which looks like potatoes!) The main thing was it was fun, and quick. I have been doing so many of the collages, I have missed the watercolors, but I think it has helped me be a little faster and not so detailed.

I started this at Ceta Canyon Art Retreat, and finally finished him. I added some color to the background,

and some color on his shirt, plus some little detail stuff to his face, hair, etc.

I am having problems getting a good photo, it is either dark, or bright...This one is just straight from the camera, without changing anything. It looks a little dull compared to the real painting.

This man was fishing on the beach in Florida. He was using a net, and throwing it out, and each time he caught something! I had never seen anybody fish like that before, and he let me take his photo

The dolphins were swimming out past him, you could see their fins. A sight we don't see here!

I decided to leave his hat and shirt white, instead of the colors he had on to make his face more important.

It is 16x20 with a mat on it.

Lubbock Arts Festival

The Lubbock Arts Festival was this past week end, and I was asked to demo the Torn Paper Collage
each afternoon. It was 6 hours each day, for 3 days, and it was one of the hardest things I have done in a long time! It was fun, and I met a lot of people but was very hard to stand there for so long, and try to turn paper into a painting. When I finish the Old red truck, I will post it.
I wish I were smiling in this photo! It was taken on Sunday, after working Friday and Saturday, so maybe the tired was showing! It was taken by Denis Quant. He was walking around, taking photos, and sent me what he took. Thanks Denis!

I started this in Hobbs for a demo, and finally got it finished. I took it to the art retreat in Ceta Canyon, but just couldn't get through with it. I still had work to do on it at home. I will take it to the Arts Festival this week end in Lubbock, TX, and maybe it will go to a new home, or bike shop!
I am looking forward to the festival. They say over 150 artists will be there with their art, and I was ask
to set up, and work each afternoon, so people can see how it is done, etc. It is kind of scary to think about it, but am excited for the opportunity, and I know it will be a lot of fun. If you are close to the civic center on (April8-10) Friday, Saturday or Sunday afternoon, stop by and say hello!

I did this boot to take to the Lubbock Arts Festival. It is April 8-10. I was asked to set up and work on something each afternoon. I was excited to get to do it, I am wondering if I need to re-do the spur. It may be a little white!

I will have to make that decision soon. I marked Lubbock on the map, and did it in red and black, for obvious reasons.

I have a new gadget, Called Square. It goes in my phone, and it is a credit card reader. Works on an iphone or android. Is pretty neat. You can even take a picture of what you are selling, and it keeps it in a file so you know what is what. I hope I get to use it!

This is another painting I did at the retreat. It is half sheet, and it had gesso on it.and was painted with watercolor. I love to paint on gesso paper, with all the textures it makes. It is not this dull in real life, but for some reason, I am not having good luck getting a photo. I saw this bike hanging off a big building in Boston down by the river front. I have taken pictures of bikes for years. I love them like I do old vehicles. I am wondering if I need to punch up the red with some gouache after seeing it here, and how dark it looks. I might! I wanted the bottom corner left with no paint.

Ceta Canyon Art Retreat

This past week I was at Ceta Canyon, near Amarillo,TX. It is an awesome place to go. It is a Methodist Retreat place but everybody uses it. The deer roam all over the place, as well as wild turkey. The phones won't work there, you have to drive out to connect, which is nice.No television. Our building we paint in is really great. Has a fireplace, and lots of windows. I think they said it was started in 1918.
We have our own rooms with bathroom. We come and go whenever we want to. I tried to start by 8 every morning and we would paint until midnight. I got several pieces done. Now that I am home, a couple of them don't look so good! Plus I have to finish up what I started.
This painting is really too dark in the picture. It is not this dark across his eyes. After I work some more, I will re photo him. He was a fisherman I got in Florida. I left the net out. Just wanted his face. I hope I can finish him and do him justice! I am trying to figure out what colors would work best on cap and shirt!

Yesterday was the demo in Hobbs NM, and it was a lot of fun.
The Art Asc. members there were very friendly, and put me at ease.
The Demo is 18"x24", and I just got started, and was time to quit.
I realized after I was through that I didn't start with big enough pieces, plus,
I started out w/ the wrong papers. I intended to use black and white, and I was putting down red and white! It was because I was nervous I guess!
I worked a little over an hour on it, and it looks like nothing! I will post it when I am finished.
I was excited to sell another little collage. The Lil Red Bike was a muddy watercolor to begin with, and I collaged over it, matted it with red and white, and put in a black frame.
So the Lil Red Bike has a home in Hobbs now!

This old pick up has been painted more than once! I have it in gouache, and in watercolor. I am still trying to decide if I want to do a big collage of a vehicle, so I am experimenting on smaller ones. It was like the others, just a lot of fun to do. In the original photo, it is blue and rusted, but I wanted to try the red. I may get crazier...and do another one in the blues. I am doing a demo tomorrow in Hobbs NM, for the art asc. there, so it helped me decide on the colors for that too.
This is availabe, unframed, but ready to hang.

Daisy DeSoto is a watercolor I did, and the first show it was in, sold.
and I always liked it, and would love to do another one, but probably wouldn't
be like the first one. I have been thinking of doing a 30x40 torn paper ...old vehicle,
so I thought I would experiment with a 10"x10" and see if I was brave enough to try
the BIG canvas. So, I printed out a copy of my original in B/W, and did the small one..'Little Daisy ' It definitely wouldn't let me be picky with the details! I think I will do a big old pick-up
on the large canvas. Am thinking a red one. ...but I will have to figure that out when I
get ready to do it.

I am excited..I have sold 6 paintings in the last 2 weeks! 5 of them collages.
May not happen again for a long time, but am going to enjoy it while I can!

I reworked the background by getting rid of the white stripe.
It was bothering me. It was just too straight, and white.
I have one coat of varnish so I consider him done.
I would love to sell him to a pizza place!

I took a picture of this pizza statue in NY this summer.
I love these statues and always take pictures of them. I had a
white background, then a black background. Was hard to decide
exactly what he needs. His face was really hard for me to do,
and may (probably will) work on him again.
After going to Florida for the workshop, I am considering doing
a 'bigger' one. I happen to already have a larger canvas so it is 'handy.'
Already have ideas of what to do next.
I am doing a demo in Hobbs next week end, so I will be getting that
together next week.

This is another red bike, with a woven basket. It was a little tedious,
trying to weave the strips. It is 6x9 unframed.
The Blue Bike, and the large red bike have been sold also.

Black white and Blue

Friday, I flew to Dallas, and met up with Nancy Standlee, a collage artist from Arlington, and then we flew on to Orlando, Fla. We went to the two day workshop with Derek Gores, in Melbourne, Florida where Derek grew up.

Derek is very talented and creative.(and humble) It was a good workshop.

I am not happy with my 1st piece. The Black and white one. I didn't get a likeness. I probably will do some refining with hopes of getting one, or just moving on to the next one.
Which is a side view, done in red, white black and white.
I was thrilled AND shocked when he ask to show my piece and talked about what I had done that he liked!
Nancy and I got an opportunity on Friday and Saturday afternoon, to get a few pictures.
These are all that blogger would let me add or I would have shown a couple more.
We had a lot of laughs, and learned a lot from each other. I now have another new friend.

Nancy Standlee, a Collage Artist/friend was featured on an art video blog. This company makes top notch art videos, by very well known artists.
They ask her who had inspired her along with the artists she had studied with.
I was honored to be on that list along with other wonderful collage artists.
