Karla's Cabo Sketchbook

Keri and I took Karla (granddaughter) to Cabo for her graduation in 2013, and I am just finishing her sketchbook from our trip.  I found the sketchbook while there. It had gray paper and the ugly man on the front! I have never seen so many skeletons!  It was fun to do but i started it and then stuck back, so this year I got it back out and finished it.  I enjoyed reliving our fun trip.

Johnny Rockets

When we were in Mexico this summer, we found this great hamburger place called,
Johnny Rockets. I loved the all white with the red stripes, red chairs and booths.  It was near closing time when Karla and I went in to get a hamburger and milk shake (Keri was sick in the room) and the people that worked there were discussing something and I caught their photo as we walked in. I considered putting something on the wall, but kept thinking I wanted it to be about them, not a clock or sign, etc.
This is painted on Strathmore 90lb watercolor paper with 2-3 layers of gesso for the texture, using watercolor.  I love painting this way, because of the lines in the paper, and being able to save back whites. It is half sheet size, so it will be large when framed.

The Buffet

While we were in Cabo, I saw a lot of chefs cooking, and took a lot of photos.  This was one morning at the breakfast buffet. It was out side which made it even more fun. This is watercolor but it is painted on watercolor paper coated with gesso first. I don't think I got a true color on their faces. They aren't really this dark red. This is not my normal way of painting but is fun, and I always enjoy doing something different. It is 11x15. It will be framed to 16x20.

The Colors of Cabo San Lucas

There were so much color in Cabo! It was such fun, and I got a lot of photos.  These poor chefs had a tiny place to cook.  Most everybody eats outside. We walked by this door every time we went back to where we were staying, and I would try to photo him cooking, and sometimes he would turn around, so I would walk on. The door was actually pink. NOT this bright but pink anyway.
This is done on a piece of watercolor paper with 2-3 coats of white gesso. Each coat painted in a different direction.  When you put the watercolor on it, it goes in the groves etc. and I love the effects. You can clean it off back to the white too if you need to. It will be 16x20 framed.

Sketches of Cabo Trip

In July my daughter and I took our son's daughter, Karla on a trip for her graduation. I found a sketchbook there in a shop so I am trying to fill it with stuff from our trip.  We had such a good time and have many photos yet to do. We have several fun stories as well.  I hope that it will always be a special memory for Karla and Keri.  I know it  already is for me.
