Made in the USA

Made in the USA
In January when I went to Tyler to teach, I also visited with my aunt in Avinger. She had several old bikes sitting around, and I love bicycles. This one was down at their cabin sitting by a boat. I took some close ups of different parts of it, and I love the way the light was hitting it.
I used kosher and table salt to make the rust.
I couldn't decide what to put behind it because I knew the boat wouldn't work, so I dug through some papers to find a design that I liked. I just drew in the shapes from the paper, after first putting down a yellow wash. Then I was able to paint a lot of it negatively leaving the yellow showing through. It has several glazes of other colors along with some turquoise and orange splatters.

Workshop with Kay Smith

Kay and her demo
Kay Smith-Suzy Powell
Painting-not named yet
Saturday I was lucky enough to get to go take a workshop from Kay Smith in Big Spring, TX.
She is becoming very well known, just got in Splash 14 among several other art books.
She is an awesome teacher. Be sure and go to her blog and check it all out.

We did mixed media. Using matte medium, we glued down 4 pages from a telephone book on hot press watercolor paper. After 10 minutes, we tore off what would come off, leaving some of the paper. Then after it dried, we sketched our images on using charcoal. Then we painted with gouache. Then we collages some. I used wrapping paper from a birthday gift. The image is a manikin. I took photos of her last week. I also used some gold leaf on her hat. I have a few touches I need to do yet.

The first photo is the demo that Kay did. This technique goes pretty fast ...after you prepare the paper. The bottom photo is the one that I did. For some reason I haven't named it yet! that is very unusual for me!

Happy Easter!

Happy Easter!
I made these for our Yoakum County Art Asc. meeting this week. They are a cute thing to do for
Easter. I usually make a bunny cake for Sunday too.
I colored the coconut with yellow food coloring, and the eyes are mini chocolate chips. The beak is made from orange slices. Keri found these on Pinterest. It was not my idea!
I hope everybody has a wonderful Easter and remember what we are celebrating...Jesus Death, burial and resurrection. We are a very blessed people to have the opportunity to have Jesus in our lives. I thank Him for loving me, and dying for me. I am so glad he arose on that 3rd day!

Brownfield Texas Art Show

My old truck that I named, 'The Red Door' won a 1st place in the Brownfield art show this past week. I also sold a collage of a zebra...' Just be Yourself'
Its always a nice 3 day show. There were a lot of entries this year. The Best in Show definitely deserved to win. It was a beautiful graphite/charcoal.

New Interior

Here is another Steering Wheel painting. I love looking in these old vehicles. I have a couple more that I plan on painting. This was an old car that I found at the Fort Worth Stockyards.
The Red and White interior really grabbed my attention, so naturally I had to take pictures while nobody was around. This is transparent watercolors with a little bit of white gouache.
The image size is 14x18.

Summer Fence

Last year while driving around in Myrtle Beach, we found a house with this beautiful fence covered with flowers. This is 9x12 Acrylic, but am not sure about the acrylics yet. They are messy, and you have to keep putting them out, and I had it all over me! I still love the transparent Watercolors and the collages. I really love oil paintings where all the brush strokes show, and so that is why I was trying the acrylic. I am allergic to Oil paint.

Orange Umbrella

This acrylic is on a 9x12 canvas. It was my first torn paper collage and did not like it. I painted over it with acrylic and put it up for a year, and then got it down to do this painting on, so there is a lot of texture behind the paint. All the umbrellas and chairs where we were were all blue, but with blue sky, blue water, etc. the chair had to be a different color. I have been thinking about going back and putting a green or yellow towel hanging off the chair or the life guard stand. I still need something a lot bigger for my bathroom, so back to the drawing board tomorrow.
I also have some umbrellas and chairs that are multicolored, so that will probably be next.

Lubbock Arts Festival

The West Texas watercolor society always paints small works to sell.  This is a wonderful art get together. It is coming up in April.  thi...
