This next CFAI Visual Magazine will have a critique of my work in it by an Art Critic from NY, Hall Groat II. Here is what he said about my work. It was a pretty short critique.  The critiques he has done of other artists were lengthy, so I was sort of shocked when mine was just a paragraph! Not that I wanted a long one, it just wasn't what I was expecting! He picked out his favorite of my collages, and I wouldn't have thought he would choose the patriotic clown! Plus add Witty as a description of my work. I looked the word 'witty' up and it said humorous or clever. I would like to think that maybe my work would create a smile or be clever!

Suzy Pal Powell’s Witty Art

Texas-based artist, Suzy Powell strikes the eyes and seduces the minds of viewers through her colorful contemporary pop culture watercolors and mixed-media collages. Her bold, luminous work has a larger than life, iconic quality to it. The geometry in of itself is as interesting as the epic images she depicts. One of my favorite pieces is a 12×16 inch torn paper collage, entitled Patriotic Clown.
This highly inventive, satirical piece is quite apropos as we approach the November 2012 election here in the United States. Yes, indeed, politics is certainly like a circus this day and age—what’s the next act?
Ms. Powell’s torn paper collages evoke the sociopolitical wit of Bearden in a huge way.
I’ve always been fan of Romare Bearden’s collages from the early 20th century Harlem Renaissance, which was a cultural movement that took place during the 1920’s and 1930’s in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City.

New Book is finally here!

 I am excited to get in another book by Chris Unwin.  This is an awesome book, and I am so very honored to be in it with so many wonderful artists! Some I hope to meet someday and some that I have watched for years!  This is the cover...a painting by Chris.

 This Painting has always been one of my favorites.  It belongs to a friend in Lubbock, TX.  It started out as an experiment.  I drew flowers on plain white watercolor paper, painted them and then drew the zebra's over the flowers, trying to get them in the right spot. It was fun to paint!
It got 'nearly'  a 2 page spread!

The Rodeo Clown was one of my first collages that I did.
It also belongs someone in Lubbock, TX.  This has some acrylics in the back ground, and some in the shadow areas.

I found out last week that the three images, Rodeo Clown, Fashion Statement, and Threes a Crowd was chosen for the new Creative Touch 5 book, by Chris Unwin. I was in it last year with 'Diamond Reo' an old truck painting. I don't know yet which one or if they will use all of them.

The painting, Summer Fence will be in the Best of America's Landscapes, put out by Kennedy publishing. I was in their watercolor book a few years back.

I feel very blessed, and am very excited to get to be in these two books! I will have some of the Creative Touch to sell if anybody wants one. The other one you would just have to order if you decided to purchase one. (or I could order one for you)

Last night in Portales, NM before Demo started

The past four days have been nothing but torn paper collage! I was ask to demo at the Lubbock Arts Festival, Friday-Sunday and I had a demo scheduled in Portales, NM for Monday night.
My fingers still have glue on them! But what fun it was. There were so many people who came through the arts festival. I met a lot of nice people who appreciate art! I did sell my Rodeo Clown. It was sort of sad for me because I really liked him, but we can't keep everything we do.
I still have so many stacked up as it is!
The pictures aren't in order because I don't know how to move them once they are on here, so they have the info under them.

Rodeo Clown

I was excited to hear that my Rodeo Clown made the newspaper in Midland,TX.
The exhibit is at the Midland College. One of the women who works at the college was kind enough to let me know, plus send me two copies of the paper! I would not have even known if she not told me! Thanks Karen for letting me know!

After doing the first clown, I wanted to do one, who 'really' looked like a rodeo clown, with a flag, so I took the same photo, flipped it backwards, and put a western hat on him, and used papers that were red white and blue.

Midland Texas Art Show

The opening of the Midland show was last night, and we got lost, but got there just in time for the awards. I hadn't seen the program or looked around so when the President of the college called my name for Honorable Mention, I was so shocked. Not only was there a ribbon, but also a nice check to go with it! I wasn't really sure how this would be accepted in the art world because there is VERY little acrylic paint on it. The rest is torn up magazine pages. It is such fun, and very addictive.
